NEW LONDON, Wis. - With five games in five days this week, the Marinette Marine baseball team needs complete-game pitching performances as much as anything.

The Marines got exactly that in a 3-1, 4-2 doubleheader sweep of New London Monday. Jake McMahon fired a three-hitter, with one walk and seven strikeouts in the first game.

In the nightcap, Derek Klegin limited the Bulldogs to two runs on eight hits with six strikeouts.

"It helped us a lot because with all the games - five games in five days - pretty tough for using a lot of pitchers," Marinette coach Dave Francour said. "We were very happy."

Marinette utilized Klegin's single to start the first game. Austin Wright bunted him over to second and Jake Swenson singled him home.

New London quickly tied the score. Matt Ott singled and scored on Kevin McClone's double in the bottom of the first.

After that, McMahon allowed just four more baserunners. He struck out the side to end the game.

Marinette scratched out another run in the third when Klegin drew a leadoff walk, Wright bunted him over to second and Aaron Benson hit an RBI double.

In the fourth, Cody Tessmer reached on an error, advanced on a wild pitch and scored on McMahon's base hit.

Joe Schuster held the Marines to just three hits in Game 1.

In Game 2, Marinette cranked out nine hits but stranded seven baserunners.

New London took the lead in the top of the first when Ott singled and scored on Hunter Muthig's ground-out.

Marinette tied the score in the bottom of the first. Klegin hit a leadoff single, stole second and scored on Wright's double.

Ty Bebo hit a one-out triple to ignite Marinette's two-run second. He scored on Quentin Ellie's base hit, and Ellie scored on a wild pitch.

In the third, Nathan Kallestad singled, stole second and scored on Swenson's hit.

In the seventh, Muthig singled in New London's second run.

Despite all of the games, the Marine coaches had a contingency plan for dipping into the bullpen. Fortunately, McMahon and Klegin avoided that.

Marinette evened its record at 2-2 overall and in the Bay Conference. New London is 0-4.
