OCONTO FALLS - Derek Klegin's complete-game masterpiece led the Marinette baseball team to a 5-0 win over Oconto Falls Monday.
Klegin allowed one hit and five walks while striking out 10. He pitched out of a jam after walking the first two batters, Alex Johnson and Colton Giese, in the fourth inning.
"He didn't have his good stuff but he got ahead of hitters early in the game," Marinette coach Dave Francour said. "He was sneaky quick but he went through phases where he walked a few guys. He made the pitches when he had to make the pitches."
The Marines improved to 5-1 overall and in the Bay Conference. Falls is 1-5.
Marinette capitalized on an infield error to take a 2-0 lead in the third inning. Jake McMahon reached on the error, stole second and scored on Ty Bebo's base hit. Bebo stole second, took third on Quentin Ellie's sacrifice bunt and raced home to beat the throw from first after Klegin's come-backer to the pitcher.
Marinette tacked on three runs with a two-out rally in the fifth. Ellie reached on an error, Klegin walked and Austin Wright singled in a run. Following another error, Aaron Benson singled in the fifth run.
