Legion win streak ends at 11

SCHOFIELD, Wis. - Errors and stranded baserunners contributed to the end of Marinette Legion's 11-game win streak Friday night.
R-S-W (Rothschild-Schofield-Weston) held on for a 12-10 win over Post 39 at D.C. Everest High School.
The teams played a nine-inning game, the same length as postseason Legion games. Regular-season games are normally seven innings.
Marinette outhit its opponent 15-12, but left 13 runners on base. R-S-W had just five left on base.
Post 39 fell to 17-8, but the players have no time to dwell on a snapped streak. They will play a doubleheader at Wausau today, then head back to play at Oconto Falls on Sunday.
"I don't think they were looking at the streak," Marinette coach Brian Lesandrini said. "They just wanted to win the game. They're already looking forward to tomorrow."
Marinette starting pitcher Aaron Benson struggled early in a four-run first inning. Marinette answered with a four-run second.
Benson pitched four-plus innings, with nine runs - seven earned - on nine hits with four walks and four strikeouts. The defense was sloppy behind him, according to Lesandrini.
Marinette rallied to take a 9-7 lead in the top of the fifth, but R-S-W answered with five runs in the bottom of the inning. Benson allowed the first two batters to reach safely, then was relieved by Austin Belonga, who made his first mound appearance since undergoing an appendectomy two weeks ago.
Belonga allowed three earned runs on three hits and a walk in four innings pitched. He fanned seven.
"Once he got in a groove he picked up where he left off," Lesandrini said.
Leadoff batter Derek Klegin went 4 for 6, including an RBI double in the third and an RBI triple in the fifth for Marinette. Scott Eldredge and Belonga each knocked in three runs with three hits.
"We put ourselves in a hole, battled back and took the lead," Lesandrini said. "We had plenty of opportunities. Our defense got away from us tonight, didn't help our pitching out. Too many mistakes on defense hurt us."
