MARINETTE - Never has a baseball team winced more while winning easily.
Marinette Legion cruised to a 13-0 win over Peshtigo Tuesday night at Pedersen Ball Park.
One out away from a five-inning perfect game, Post 39 pitcher Aaron Benson anguished over Jacob Bloch's infield hit. Shortstop Jake McMahon fielded the high hopper cleanly and fired a strike to first, but Bloch beat it out.
McMahon moved to short to replace Derek Klegin, who injured his throwing shoulder sliding home to score.
McMahon had a lump on his elbow after getting hit by a pitch. Marinette catcher Beau DeLaet was smacked hard in the shoulder by a foul ball. Marinette player Kiefer Powers rolled an ankle playing summer basketball and was sidelined.
"Just a few dings," Marinette coach Brian Lesandrini said. "They'll be fine. Just precautionary more than anything."
Peshtigo may be winless but the Bulldogs appeared to have a better time than Post 39.
"Kids are having fun," Peshtigo coach Geoff Sparks. "I mean, we're always the loudest dugout."
Benson was so close to having the most fun of all. He struck out eight and just two of his pitches were hit hard - Danny Payne's line drive to left in the third and Tom Quigley's shot to center in the fifth.
But he just missed his first-ever perfect game.
"I try not to think about it," Benson said. "Just frustrated."
Marinette (9-7) batted around the order in a five-run second. Austin Belonga reached on an error and Nate Kallestad doubled down the left-field line. Luke Kelly hit an RBI single through the hole, and McMahon's ground-out scored Kallestad. Austin Wright lined an RBI single to center, Klegin singled to left and DeLeat beat out an infield grounder for an RBI single.
"We took advantage of some mistakes," Lesandrini said. "I thought our approach at the plate was good. We hit the ball hard."
Post 39 tacked on five runs in the third. Belonga singled, Kallestad reached on an error and Kelly doubled in a run. McMahon was plunked and Ty Bebo hit an RBI groundout. Cody Tessmer walked and DeLaet hit an RBI opposite-field single.
Three walks loaded the bases for Marinette in the fourth. Wright singled in a run and DeLaet and Benson hit sacrifice flies.
With this weekend's Firecracker Tourney, pitching is at a premium and Lesandrini was pleased with Benson's efficiency.
"He threw strikes," Lesandrini said. "That keeps our defense alive. He was around the zone all game, and his two pitch (curveball) was working well tonight."
