Fast start after a slow beginning
Maroons win season opener

EBEN JUNCTION, Mich. - The Menominee boys' basketball team overcame a long bus trip, a late start to the season and a hurried pre-game warmup to open its season with a convincing win Monday night.
After discovering tip-off was scheduled for 6 p.m. instead of 6:30, the Maroons made quick work of Superior Central (0-3) in a 68-40 victory.
Tyler Howell worked the inside for 10 points as the Maroons bolted out of the gate for a 21-9 lead after the first quarter.
Cody Maki's 3-pointer chipped the deficit to 26-15 but Devon Barley muscled in a putback. Maki drained another triple to trim the margin to 26-18.
The Maroons cleared the offensive boards after missed free throws and Adam Nolde drained a jumper to restore the double-digit lead.
A Justin Hill basket and coast-to-coast drive by Maki slashed the Maroon lead to 28-22 when Menominee coach Pete Pericolosi called a time out with 2:28 left in the half.
Devon Harris stalled the Cougars' surge with two free throws and Tyler Howell scored from the paint to push the lead back to 10 points. Harris sailed in for a layup while being hacked and sank the free throw to stretch the lead to 35-22 with 50 seconds left in the half.
After the Maroons forced a turnover, Barley hit a shot from the perimeter to jack the lead to 15 points at the break.
Nolde, a sophomore, scored 10 points in the first half, highlighted by a pair of threes.
Menominee held Superior Central scoreless for the first five minutes of the third quarter while breaking the game open.
Harris slashed through the Cougars again for another three-point play and Ty Clausen swiped the ball and raced in for two to pad the lead to 42-22 midway through the third quarter.
Superior Central sent Harris back to the line and he sank one of two before whistling an assist to Clausen, stretching the lead to 45-22.
Nolde buried his third 3-pointer of the night in the closing seconds to give the Maroons a 52-28 lead heading into the fourth quarter.
A Barley basket gave the Maroons a 30-point advantage with under five minutes left in the game.
Howell led four Maroons in double-digits with 15 points. Nolde popped in 13 in his varsity debut, Barley had 12 and Harris added 11. Maki led the Cougars with 10 points.
