DENMARK, Wis. - The Marinette Marine golf team was good but not quite good enough Tuesday.
Except for senior Abby Dufrane, who qualified for state with a clutch 78 round at the WIAA Division 2 Denmark Sectional.
The top two teams and top three individuals not members of those two teams qualified for the state tourney, to be held Monday and Tuesday near Madison.
Marinette fired a 366 at the Par 72 Twin Oaks Golf Course.
The Prairie School won the sectional title with a 354 and Fox Valley Lutheran was second at 358.
"We played well but not well enough," Marine coach Stephanie Haines said.
The Marines were unfortunately playing in a stacked sectional that included three of the top four ranked teams in the state. The Prairie School is ranked No. 2 and FVL is third. Ninth-ranked Marinette finished 20 strokes ahead of fourth-ranked Xavier, and the Marines also beat Bay Conference champion Denmark by 17 strokes on its home course.
"No matter how well you do you're going to question what shots you could've done better," Haines said, "and that's exactly what the girls did today."
Dufrane struggled through a 41 on the front nine but regrouped for a 37 to come in at 78.
"She was a little disappointed with that (41)," the Marine coach said.
But at the turn, the Marines were within three shots of a top-two team score, and the meet was still wide-open. Haines had a message for her golfers.
"Do not focus on beating your girl. Focus on your own game," she told them.
Only Sienna Chapman of The Prairie School (75) beat Dufrane.
Marine sophomore Kayla Thielen shot an 89 to miss a state-qualifying spot by six shots. Kate Wurflova of Luxemburg-Casco (80) and Xavier's Mikala Smith (83) earned the other state berths.
After shooting a 39 on the front nine, Thielen took an eight on a Par 3 and carded a 50 after the turn. But her score was still remarkable for a sophomore who was shooting nine-hole rounds in the 60s as a jayvee last year.
"I am just astounded with how far Kayla Thielen has come," Haines said. "I'm so excited to see where she goes next year."
Cassie Hilbert played her usual consistent game with a 46-45 - 91 for Marinette. Lexi Bretl struggled through a 113. Liz Lang's 108 rounded out the team score.
Dufrane, the team's only senior, will head to Madison on Sunday. The two-day, 36-hole tourney will be held at University Ridge Golf Course in Verona. Dufrane has qualified for state three times as an individual and once with a Marine team.
