PESHTIGO - Down 2-0 just a few minutes into Saturday's game, the Peshtigo softball team didn't flinch.
The Bulldogs just kept hacking away until the popups and dribblers became line drives, and they went on to beat Green Bay West 11-2 in a nonconference game.
West's leadoff batter, Lauren Yates, singled and stole second. Masion Esrano then reached on an infield hit. Alissa Jakpovich and Emily Belongia drove in runs with ground-outs.
The Bulldogs were retired in order in the first two innings but were undaunted.
"We're pretty good at keeping our heads cool and coming together when we need it," Bulldog pitcher Maizie Reif said. "We've been struggling coming out at the start. That's something we'll improve on."
Teja Tonn reached on an infield error to open the third. Abbi Fredrickson singled to left and Jaden Russell was hit by a pitch.
Reif rolled a two-out, full-count, two-run single up the middle to tie the game.
Russell scored on a wild pitch and Reif scored when Dani Zahn drew a walk and didn't settle for first. When ball four bounced to the backstop, Zahn raced all the way to second and Reif scored.
"In the third we started getting into our groove," Peshtigo coach Tom Christensen said. "Once we got the second time around (the batting order), it started working."
Peshtigo sent 10 batters to the plate in a six-run fifth. Dani Sparks lofted a leadoff double that was lost in the sun. Carlee Mylener reached on an error and Russell crushed an RBI double into the left/center gap. Russell scored on an error, Ryleigh Klaver reached safely when her sacrifice bunt was misplayed, and Fredrickson lined an RBI single to left.
In the sixth, Russell reached on an error and scored on a wild pitch.
Reif settled down after the rocky start to allow just four hits and two walks, striking out three in six innings. She kept the Wildcats guessing by mixing in changeups no matter what the count.
"My changeup was working pretty good today," Reif said.
Mylener pitched a hitless seventh, with one strikeout and a walk.
It was the fifth game of the week for Peshtigo (4-1). Despite signs of fatigue, the defense and pitching were sound. Peshtigo committed one error.
"What I want them to do is make most of the routine plays," Christensen said.
