GREEN BAY - Peshtigo stepped up against a school nearly three times its size and won a boys' basketball game Friday afternoon.

The Bulldogs beat Hortonville 51-40 at UW-Green Bay's Kress Center.

Peshtigo (7-0) will play Luxemburg-Casco today at 10:30 a.m. at the Kress Center.

Clinging to a one-point halftime lead, the Bulldogs slowly pulled away in the second half.

"We said we had to play better in the second half," Peshtigo coach Ryan Spaulding said. "We did. I think we played with more confidence in the second half."

Peshtigo mixed up its zone defenses against the Polar Bears (2-5).

"We defended well," Spaulding said. "We sagged off. Hortonville is a good slashing team, a good penetrating team, so our emphasis was on taking those things away."

Peshtigo rebounded better in the second half, Spaulding said. Jordan Berth led the rebounding battle with 11 boards to go along with 10 points. Zack Neumann scored 19 points for Peshtigo. The Bulldogs were seven for 15 from 3-point range, and 17 of 38 overall. Hortonville was 13 for 26 from inside the arc but just three for 16 from 3-point range.

"I think it gives the kids a lot of confidence," Spaulding said of the win over a Division 1 team. "We believe we can do that. Those are the types of teams we need to beat to compete at the Division 3 level."
