MENOMINEE — Beginner’s luck (or was it skill) prevailed at the seventh annual Pirate’s Cove Chinookie Slam fishing tournament Saturday on the waters of Green Bay.

First-year entry Aric Chaltry and his crew aboard the Knot Hunting finished first in the total weight category with a total of three fish weighing 35.40 pounds. They also landed the largest salmon of the day weighing 18.75 pounds.

The largest trout category went to Bret Babl aboard the BB with a 10.40-pound rainbow trout. Second place in the total weight category was recorded by Howard Herrild with four salmon weighing 21.80 pounds.

Third place was awarded to the previous three-year champion, Keith Waloway, and his crew aboard the Brook Trout.

Fourth place went to Gene Hart on the Love Machine and fifth place went to Scott Chevalier on the King Slayer.

Calm seas and warm temperatures greeted anglers at the 6 a.m. shotgun start. Chinook salmon and rainbow trout made up the majority of the catch with a few brown trout mixed in.

The Pirate’s Cove Bar and Grill in Menominee hosted the awards ceremony following the event.
