“I was surprised at Dan Peterson’s comments in ‘State finance leader visits Marinette’ on Sept. 12. In response to the ‘shortage of affordable housing in the area,’ the Stephenson National Bank & Trust president was quick to blame city government, saying that we need to bring in TIF districts to bring in developers to build new houses. He may very well be right. Still, it surprised me since his own bank recently paid for the demolition of affordable houses in Marinette and Menominee to make room for their own bank projects, projects that benefit the bottom line of their business. And he got city government support to do it. So if I have this right, he agrees we have a shortage of affordable houses in the area but as long as the bank gets what it wants, they can tear some of the ones we have down.”
