Before graduating from Marinette High School, Robert attended Martin Luther High School in New Ulm, Minn., where he was an exceptional athlete setting many state records in basketball. After graduation he enlisted in the United States Air Force and served as a dental assistant and technician while stationed in Germany. Returning home after four years of service he was introduced to and later married the love of his life, the former Donna Schroeder of Loomis, Wis., on September 5, 1959. He worked at Marinette Paper Company (Scott Paper) from 1959-1963, then moved to Peshtigo and took over his father’s gas station business shortly after his father unexpectedly passed away. He opened an additional gas station a few years later, Hartwig’s Gas-4-Less in Crivitz. In 1987, Robert built and operated the Rubber Ducky Car Wash in Marinette and retired in 1998. As a member of St. Mark Church in Wallace and an over 40-year member of Zion Lutheran Church in Peshtigo, he was active in many church activities and served as a council member and church officer numerous times.  Affectionately known to many in his later years only as Papa, he was devoted to and cherished the time he spent following his three grandsons academic and athletic accomplishments, wherever that took him.
