Martha "Marty" (Wood) Verba

Martha "Marty" (Wood) Verba, 89, of Daggett, Mich., passed away quietly in her home, Thursday June 27, 2013. She was born October 28, 1923 in Chicago Ill., the 9th of 10 children born to the late George and Freida (Brei) Wood.
Marthy attended Kitty Corner Grade School and in 1942 graduated from Palatine High School, Palatine, Ill. Martha moved to Chicago during World War II, where she worked as a long distance operator for Illinois Bell Telephone. While in Chicago Martha met and on January 27, 1945, married Gordon Lee Verba of Daggett, Mich., celebrating 61 wonderful years. He preceded in death October 9, 2006. They made their homes in Chicago, Palatine, and Mt Prospect, Ill. Martha was a member of St Paul United Church of Christ, Palatine, where she served faithfully with the Women's Guild, Loyal Order of Moose, Barrington Ill., serving on the entertainment committee and served as secretary of the Art League of Mt Prospect, Ill. They bought the farm in Daggett in 1971. After Gordon's retirement, they built their family home in Daggett, where they have spent many happy times with family and friends. While residing in Daggett, Marty was a member of the Daggett Moravian Church. She served as vice president of the Ladies Aux American Legion Post #43. She enjoyed dancing, gardening, oil painting, ceramics, fishing, hunting and playing pinochle with the Jolly 8. Marty was a leader in both the Blue Birds and Camp Fire Girls organization, and was involved with the 4 H Club.
Martha is survived by two daughters: Linda (Ralph) Hayford of Hoffman Estates, Ill., Sandra Lee (Roy) Cunningham of Barrington Hills, Ill.; one son, Gary Verba of Daggett; one son-in-law, O'Dean Klutts of Marengo, Ill.; seven grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren; sisters:; Bernice Russo and Reta Bradley, both of New Jersey; many cousins, nieces and nephews. Martha was preceded in death by one daughter, Pamela Jean Klutts and granddaughter, Terri Lynn Hayford; four brothers: George, Raymond, Fredrick and Charles Wood and two sisters: Violet Etzkorn and Vernett Sheetz.
Visitation will be Saturday, June 29, 2013 after 4 p.m. at the Anderson Diehm Funeral Home, Stephenson, Mich. Visitation will continue Sunday from noon until funeral service at 1 p.m. at the Daggett Moravian Church, Daggett Mich. Pastor Gary Straughan officiating.
Burial will immediately follow in the Bethesda Cemetery, Daggett Mich.
