Loraine B. Washburn, 96, of Marquette, died Monday morning, September 2, 2013, at Mill Creek Assisted Living under the care of U.P. Home Health and Hospice. Mrs. Washburn was born on September 11, 1916, in Menominee, Mich. to the late Frank and Clara (Holsbach) Kreuz.
Loraine was a 1934 graduate of Menominee High School. In 1938, she graduated from Marquette University in Milwaukee. She remained at Marquette University as a secretary to the Dean of the School of Business Administration until her marriage to Robert D. Washburn at Epiphany Catholic Church in Menominee on January 24, 1942. During World War II, Loraine was employed as secretary to the Field Director of the Red Cross Unit at Fort Belvoir where her husband was stationed. When her husband began a private forestry and surveying consulting business in Marquette, Loraine became a partner in the endeavor, working alongside her husband and in the woods as a surveyor's assistant on survey projects. She also received her pilot's license to assist her husband in their business. Loraine was a member of St. Christopher Catholic Church in Marquette and formerly St. Mary's Catholic Church in Big Bay.
Loraine is survived by 17 nieces and nephews and numerous great nieces and nephews. Preceding her in death besides her parents, was her husband, Robert D. Washburn on July 9, 2000; also three sisters: Mary, Gertrude and Grace; and four brothers: Clarence, Frank, Leo, and Kenneth.
A Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Friday, September 6th at 10:30 a.m. in St. Christopher Catholic Church with the Rev. Frank Lenz officiating. The family will greet relatives and friends beginning at 9:30 a.m., Friday, until the time of the Mass.
Burial will take place at Forest Home Cemetery in Marinette, Wis.
