June M. Owens, 95, of Marinette, passed away Friday, April 25, 2014, at Bay Area Medical Center. She was born June 7, 1918 in Detroit, Mich.
A graduate of Stephenson High School, June continued her education at Milwaukee Technical School, majoring in business. After working for seven years for the Marinette Recreation Department as "jack of all trades", June was appointed Program Coordinator in 1973. She started many successful programs which included after school grade centers, adult craft classes, senior citizen classes, social service classes and a year 'round tot lot program. She had charge of all summer playgrounds which included many special events such as penny carnivals, picnic play days, dog shows, family nights and many others. She coordinated a hobby show every year that was open to the public. June was also responsible for all trips, tours and special events during the year. Her duties included hiring and supervising of personnel for these programs. She was later appointed Acting Director of the Marinette Recreation Department by then Mayor Edward Parsek. An active member of First United Methodist Church of Marinette, June was a member of its educational board and the United Methodist Women. She was a Sunday School teacher for 22 years. When her children were growing up, June was active in Parent-Teacher Associations. She was a member of the former ARC, serving as membership committee chairman and was also a member of the Wisconsin Parks and Recreation Association. June's hobbies included ceramics, bike riding, hiking and tennis. Her favorite pastime was spending weekends at the family cabin in the summer.
June was married to the late Maynard Owens and together had three children: Joanne Owens (now deceased), Tom Owens of Marinette and John Owens and his wife, Diane of Winneconne, Wis. She is also further survived by ten grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren and one great-great-granddaughter.
Friends may call at First United Methodist Church in Marinette from 10 a.m. until 11:30 a.m. on Friday, May 2, 2014. Funeral services will follow at 11:30 a.m. with the Rev. Kevin Dembinski officiating.
Burial will be in Forest Home Cemetery.
