Hildegarde Mary Polfus, 92, longtime resident and beloved mother, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, Nov. 26, 2018, at Pinecrest Medical Care Facility in Powers, Mich. She was born to August and Maria (Treutler) Birke on Sept. 16, 1926, in Germany.
At the age of 2 she came, with her mother, via the ship “New York,” through Ellis Island, to join her father, in Milwaukee, Wis., who had been working here to provide for her passage  to New York. After her mother’s death when she was 10, her family moved to the Upper Peninsula and the family ran a farm five miles east of Nadeau, Mich. She described the farm as “hard work,” and that she always did her part. She met the love of her life Ervin Polfus at a local dance and they were married on Nov. 12, 1949. They raised six children: Paul, Robert, Carolyn, Patricia, Ervin Jr. and Joanne, and made their longtime home at Maple Hill in Gourley, Mich. Over the years, she worked as a devoted housewife, and later as a nurse’s aide at Pinecrest Medical Care Facility.  Hilda (Mom) was fiercely devoted to her family and on many occasions sacrificed for her children’s well being. Her constant caring for her family and support of their activities was second to none and was a lifetime example for them to follow. She was an avid reader, baker, cook, seamstress, carpenter, gardener, and always had a hot cup of coffee and her delicious bakery handy. She sewed beautiful quilts for all her children. She was also known to be strong-willed in her beliefs and activities and would gladly give you the shirt off her back to make things better. Hilda was a member of the Carney Evangelical Free Church.
Hilda is survived by her sons: Paul of Carney (wife Colleen), Robert of Lake Tomahawk, Wis. (wife Toni), and Ervin Jr. of Hermansville, Mich. (wife Lori); daughters: Carolyn Laurin of Carney (John), Patricia Polfus of Green Bay, Wis. (husband Tim), and Joanne of Carney; 12 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. Hilda was preceded in death by her husband, Ervin, in 2010; and her brother, Herbert, in 2011.
Family will receive friends at the Carney Free Church on Sunday, Dec. 2, 2018, from 2 p.m. until time of funeral service at 4 p.m., with Pastor Kit Bogan officiating.
Burial will be in Maple Grove Cemetery, Oakwood.
