Hazel M. Hammett

Hazel M. Hammett, 93, longtime Marinette area resident, passed away Tuesday, June 25, 2013, at St. Michael Hospital in Stevens Point, Wis. She was born October 25, 1919 in Menominee, Mich. to Phil and Mathilda (nee Brosig) Augustine.
Hazel graduated from the former Stephenson Training School in Marinette. She married James A. Hammett on August 12, 1939. In her early life she devoted her time to raising her family and served as a leader for the Little River 4-H Club. She participated in the Community Homemaker's Club and was a member of the Marinette County Writers, later the North Harbor Writers. For several years Hazel served as the Superintendent of Writers for the Marinette County Fair. She enjoyed reading, writing, raising flowers, cooking, bicycling, attending concerts and in earlier years, dancing. She was a member of St. Paul's Episcopal Church, the Episcopal Church Women and the Chappee Rapids Audubon Society.
Hazel is survived by two daughters: Jane (Jerome) Kapla of Stevens Point, Wis. and Judith Nasgovitz of Coleman, Wis.; six granddaughters: Cheryl Krause, Karma Krause, Brenda Race, Jodi (Greg) Mason, Jill Kapla and Jennifer (Andy) Adams; six great-grandchildren: Brittney, Dakota, Robbi, Leo, Malcolm and Hugh; six sisters: Faye Winnekins, Violet Frank, Rosemary Risner, Thora Zeitler, Malva Berth and Phyllis Casper; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, James, on December 27, 2011; a son-in-law, Michael Nasgovitz; and a brother, Roy Augustine.
Friends may call at St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Marinette after 10 a.m. on Saturday, June 29, 2013. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday in the church with the Rev. William L. Bippus officiating.
Burial will be in Forest Home Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions are suggested for St. Paul's Episcopal Church.
