It is with great sorrow that we report the passing of our beloved mother, Genevieve (Gen) Gustafson, on Sunday, June 16, 2013. Born October 5, 1923, the former Genevieve Maxine Laschanzky died after a brief battle with cancer at the age of 89 at Rennes East in Peshtigo, Wis.
She was born and raised on a farm just outside Fairmont, Neb. by her parents, the late LaVerna Morris and William Laschanzky. The oldest of the couple's three children, Gen is survived by her brother, Darrell (Jody) Laschanzky of Centennial, Colo. She was preceded in death by her sister, LaVonne Ebert of Omaha, Neb.
At a USO canteen near Fairmont she met her former husband, Kenneth Gustafson, during his transition from military service during WWII. The couple lived in Kansas City, Kan. for a while before moving to his hometown of Marinette, Wis., where they owned and operated Gustafson Jewelry for over 30 years. Gen worked for many years at Kmart in Menominee, Mich., before retiring. She loved dancing, old movies, cards (as one of the "Four Queens" plus Elroy), road trips, her beloved red Dodge Daytona Shelby Z, casino trips and the Packers. She especially loved quarterbacks Favre, Rodgers and wide receiver Donald Driver. She had a deep appreciation of the beauty in nature, music of almost every type, art and architecture. She was also a consummate craftswoman: painting, drawing and sewing many of her children's clothes and inventive Halloween costumes. We all will miss her open-heartedness and generosity, her warmth and her quirky sense of humor.
Gen is survived by daughters: Anita (Terrance) Gallentine of River Falls, Wis., Gina (Roger) Gardner and Sheila Gustafson, both of Marinette; her grandchildren: Paul Holewinski, Grace (Kelly) Koesling and David Revall; a great-grandchild, Aleah Engum; along with many nieces and nephews.
A Celebration of Life will be held at a future date. Condolences can be directed to the family or through Hansen-Onion-Martell Funeral Home.
