Edward C. Zahn, 74, died at Oconto Hospital Saturday, December 28, 2013. Born June 7, 1939, in Menominee, Mich. to the late Alvin M and Helen F. (Sieber) Zahn.
He graduated from Peshtigo High School in 1957 and attained his Wisconsin Cheese Makers license at the age of 17. After graduation, he was employed as a cheesemaker at Elm Dairy Co-op, Coleman, working with his father. In April, 1959 he married his high school sweetheart, Marlene Tonn. One year later he became employed as cheesemaker for County Line Cheese Co. where he worked until 1989 when he purchased a building in Oconto and operated a retail cheese outlet, Z Cheese Shoppe, until the summer of 2012 when failing health caused him to retire. During his younger years he and two young men from his neighborhood formed a polka band and played at weddings, showers and family reunions. In County Line, Edward became a fire warden for the DNR, a position he held until 1989. He had been active in the Oconto Jaycees for more than 15 years, served as a state officer and was a member of the JCI and international Jaycee organization. Edward enjoyed bowling, fishing and golfing and had been very active in the church work and served in various positions at St. John Ev. Lutheran Church, Town of Grover. Currently he is a member at Zion Lutheran Church, Peshtigo.
Edward is survived by his wife of 54 years, Marlene; two sons: Gary (Jolene) of Oconto and David of Coleman; two daughters: Patti (Jim) Henrickson of Dallas, Texas and Lori (Scott) Plach of Appleton; six grandchildren: James, Philip and Kimberly Henrickson, Nicolle and Danielle Zahn, and Brianne Plach; two step-grandchildren: Chris and Adam Timm. Also surviving are four brothers: Rev. Allen (Linda) Zahn of Elkhorn, Charles (Linda) Zahn of McGregor, Iowa, Rev. Larry (Judy) Zahn of Alpharetta, Ga. and Ron (Brenda) Zahn of Phoenix, Ariz.; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law: Duane (Sandy) Tonn of Lake Geneva, Karen (Brian) Toole of Oconto, Dianne Stewart of Oconto, Terry (Kathy) Tonn of Galesville, Wis., Dennise and Ben Hunt of Grove City, Ohio; and many other relatives and friends. Edward was preceded in death by his parents, and brothers-in-law: Richard Tonn and Keith Tonn.
Visitation will be held on Tuesday, December 31, 2013, at Zion Lutheran Church in Peshtigo, from 12 noon until time of services at 4 p.m. with Pastor Luke Myslik officiating.
Burial will be held in the spring of 2014 in St. John's Cemetery in Grover.
