Donald L. Knutson, 92, of Marinette, passed away on Thursday, November 2, 2017, at Atrium Post Acute Care. He was born on March 20, 1925, to the late Clarence and Elizabeth (Juneau) Knutson in Marinette.
From an early age, Don loved the outdoors and all outdoor activities, including, speed skating, sailing and log rolling. He graduated in 1943 from Marinette High School where he lettered in track, football and basketball. He went on to serve his country in the Navy in the Pacific during World War II. He then attended Wabash College in Indiana, where he also played football, and moved back to Marinette and was proud to be a lifelong resident of Menekaunee. Donald married Shirley Grun on October 28, 1950, at St. Anne’s Church in Menominee. He managed Little River Country Club for four years in the late 60s and worked as a salesman for many years, retiring in 1990. He had a lifelong passion for fishing (and many enjoyed the smoked fish he was famous for), golfing (and was proud to have achieved a hole in one) and cheering for the Green Bay Packers.  He was outgoing and loved making people smile. Don will be remembered as a loving husband and father. He was a member of Holy Family Parish.
Donald is survived by his wife of 67 years, Shirley, of Menominee; daughter, Sheri (Jim) Ackley of Brevard, N.C.; sister, Clarice (Robert) Duvall of Bagley, Wis.; four grandchildren: Bradley, Brittany, Jennifer and Joanna; and four great-grandchildren: Tyler, Eric, Addilyn, and Braydon. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a son and daughter-in-law, Dennis and Kathleen; brother, David; and sister, Elaine.
Visitation will be held at Thielen Funeral Home on Monday, November 6, from 10-11:30 a.m. A Funeral Mass will be held at Holy Family Parish-Our Lady of Lourdes Church, Taylor St. at noon.
Entombment will be in Forest Home Mausoleum.
In lieu of flowers memorials to the Marinette Recreation Center in Don’s name would be appreciated.
