Donald J. Race, 82, of Marinette, passed away Friday evening, April 12, 2013, at the Luther Home. He was born October 24, 1930 in Marinette.
Donald spent most of his life in the Marinette area and was a graduate of Peshtigo High School. He went on to serve in the United States Coast Guard and was married to the former Ruth O. LaFave on May 26, 1951. While following his duty assignments, they lived in Boston, Mass. and Maine before returning to Marinette. Donald spent 35 years as an employee of Scott Paper Co., working in several job capacities. He was a member of Zion Lutheran Church in Marinette. As an outdoorsman, he especially enjoyed fishing. In more recent years he took special pleasure in going dancing with friends at Equity Hall.
Donald is survived by three children: Larry (Kris) Race and Diane Race, both of Marinette and Audra (Mark) Olson of Elcho, Wis.; six grandchildren: Nicholas (Silvia) Race of Biloxi, Miss., Tyler Race (fiancé, Rachael) of Marinette, Aaron Olson, Sarah Olson, Josh Olson and Nathali Olson, all of Elcho, Wis.; two great-grandchildren: Kaylie and Liam Race; a brother, Harold (Shirley) Race of Crivitz; nieces and nephews; and a special friend, Joyce Zorn. He was preceded in death by his wife, Ruth O. Race.
Friends may call at Zion Lutheran Church, Marinette, after 4 p.m. on Friday, April 19, 2013. Funeral services will be held at 6 p.m. on Friday in the church with the Rev. Keith A. Kolstad officiating.
Burial will be in Forest Home Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations in Donald's name are suggested for the Alzheimer's Association.
