Carol Jean (Nylund) Walk, 77, of Marinette, Wis., was born into eternal glory, June 25, 2013, with family by her side after a courageous battle with cancer. She was comforted by the unwavering assurance of God's sovereignty through her life journey. She was the beloved wife and best friend of Gerald (Jerry) Walk. Carol was born on August 21, 1935 in Daggett, Mich., to the late Elmer and Dorothy Nylund.
She is survived by her younger sister, Donna (Dan) Roetzer and preceded in death by her eldest sister, Betty Nelson. A life-long resident of Menominee/Marinette, Carol spent most of her younger life developing significant friendships through her employment at Utley's Restaurant. Throughout the 1980's she worked at Little River Country Club coordinating banquets and serving up a Friday Night Fish Fry. From 1990 until 2004 she was hired at the University of Wisconsin, Marinette, as a continuing education assistant where she enjoyed learning about the diversity in human culture. If there was any job she liked best throughout her life, it was working with Jane Jones at the UW.
Carol was a Christ follower her whole life and an active member of Emmanuel Lutheran Church where she served on the prayer team. One of her greatest passions belonged in her flower and vegetable gardens. She taught her children to love God's creation and care for everything in it including the stray cat or unwanted shelter animal that was too unruly to love. She enjoyed baking treats for her friends at the YMCA and sharing a cup of coffee with them after an early morning swim. Carol was an outdoorsy gal and planned many weekends of canoeing on the Menominee River. Her giggle was memorable and all those who knew and loved her will miss her smile. Wise, funny, dry-witted, inquisitive, feisty, independent, loving...she was all these things.
Carol was preceded in death by her son, Dean Harteau and is survived by her husband, Jerry, her daughter, Carrie Steinmetz (Harteau), son, Steven (Terri) Harteau, daughter, Julie DesJarlais, and step-children: DeWayne (Karen) DesJarlais, Dottie DesJarlais, Jeff (Sharon) DesJarlais, Diana DesJarlais (Keith Rose), Mike Walk, Tim Walk and Patrick Walk. In addition, she leaves her cherished granddaughter, Cara Kloida (Greening); grandsons: Terek Harteau, Tyler and Jacob Steinmetz; great-granddaughters: Zoie and Felicity Kloida, as well as an aunt, uncle, special nieces, significant nephews, endeared cousins and close friends.
Visitation will be held at HANSEN-ONION-MARTELL FUNERAL HOME, in Marinette, Wis., from 1 p.m. until 4 p.m. on Saturday, June 29, 2013, with funeral services starting at 4 p.m.
A special thank you to nieces, Tammy Kushman (Nelson) and Gail Sieglaff (Nelson) for the immense hospitality, love, and care they continually showered upon our mom.
