(Arthur) James Whitford, 94, of Marinette, died Thursday, March 28, 2013, at the Luther Home. He was born August 19, 1918 in Marinette.
Jim graduated from high school in 1936 and from Lawrence University in 1940. Jim served with the United States Army in the European Theatre for three and a half years during World War II. He then attended the University of Wisconsin and earned a BBA degree in 1947. Jim worked for The Ansul Company for 37 years as a Cost Accountant and Assistant Treasurer. He was also treasurer of Pioneer Presbyterian Church for fifty years. In 1947 he married Alice MacKenzie Whitford. They were married for 60 years in 2007. Jim was a kind and gentle man who loved his family and friends. He was an avid golfer and spent many happy hours at Riverside Country Club. In his earlier years, Jim bowled and played on volleyball teams. Golf was his game though and he played till he was 87 years old.
They had three children: Bonnie (Tom) Welsh, Carolyn (Jeff) Crick and Elizabeth (Gary) Scholtz, who survive along with seven grandchildren: Amanda and Jessica Welsh, Mackenzie (Andy) Torrelli, Alyssa and Caitlin Crick, B.J. (Kristin) Cavill and Ann (Justin) Stapleford; along with seven great-grandchildren and another expected soon. He is further survived by two sisters: Jane Denzin and Margaret Papenfuss. He was preceded in death by his wife, Alice, on July 18, 2011.
It was his wish that there be a private family service in place of a formal funeral.
Burial will be made in Forest Home Cemetery, Marinette.
