Cause of fire at substation unknown
MARINETTE — The cause of a fire at the Marinette Peaking plant on Cleveland Avenue that caused a power outage shortly after midnight Friday remains unknown.
Jenny Short, spokesperson for Wisconsin Public Service, said the outage began around 12:20 a.m. Saturday and affected 2,800 customers in the City of Marinette and the Town of Peshtigo.
A small structure at the plant caught fire. WPS still doesn’t know the cause of the fire, Short said. As a precautionary measure, the substation was taken offline to avoid any ignition sources.
The City of Marinette and the Town of Peshtigo fire departments put the fire out.
Most customers were back on by 1:45 a.m. and the other 50 customers were back on at 2:45.
