MILWAUKEE - Some bands are born, some are made and some make their own way to the top. My Own Masquerade from Peshtigo may well be one of the latter.
While their venues are still mainly local, tomorrow this band will perform an opening concert for the internationally-known Evanescence at The Rave in Milwaukee.
Ivan Mallory, lead vocals and guitar, Alex Schenk, guitar, and David Junak, back-up from Peshtigo, along with Cody Kamin, bass, from Menominee formed this band with one goal in mind, to revive the music scene in the Marinette and Menominee counties.
"We want to make sure everybody is enjoying our music," Mallory said. "We want to bring good music back to the area because we think it has been declining over the last few years."
With their modern rock sound, reminiscent of bands like Seether and Theory of a Deadman, the members of My Own Masquerade have already performed in various local venues with their original songs.
My Own Masquerade has put out a small album of seven tracks titled "Resist" and has another in the making. The second one is set to come out during the summer of 2013.
"Our first one is heavier," Mallory said. "It definitely has a darker sound, but the second one will have a lighter tone."
Mallory said he came up with the name My Own Masquerade while brainstorming for names for his other band, a side project for when he is away for college.
While looking for other shows to perform at, Mallory came across an opportunity for opening performances for Evanescence's Carnival of Madness tours at The Rave. He took a chance and called the manager of The Rave asking for the spot at Evanescence's concert.
"You just have to put yourself out there," Mallory said. "You can't expect people to come to you and ask you to play for them, especially when you're a new band. You have to take the initiative."
When word came back that they would be able to play before Evanescence, the band became excited. Their concert at The Rave will be the biggest venue they have performed at.
"Well there's definitely more of a chance for us to be heard in Milwaukee," Junak said. "We might even get a record deal."
Junak also said that almost all members have been playing music in various forms since an early age.
"I love creating music, I love listening to music, it's been a big part of my life," Junak said. "When you're playing in a band and you look out and see the crowd is having just as much fun as you are, it's a good feeling you get."
"It's a lot of work, a lot more than everybody thinks it is," he added.
He also said the band hopes to be able to go on tour locally or regionally sometime in the future.
"We all really enjoy the music experience," Junak said. "We just want the audience to love it too."
The band is selling discounted tickets for the concert at The Rave. People can find more information about My Own Masquerade from their Facebook page or at www.reverbnation.com/myownmasquerade. Contact info for the band can also be found on these websites.
