According to Wikipedia, Wisconsin is the fish fry leader. "The modern fish fry tradition is strongest in Wisconsin, where more than 1,000 eateries hold a weekly fish fry on Fridays, and often on Wednesdays."

Actually, Wikipedia's figure of 1,000 seems quite low. Whatever the state's number though, residents of the Marinette and Menominee area are lucky to have so many great places to enjoy a fish fry.

EagleHerald staff writer Mike Desotell featured two local favorites for a Friday night fish fry in last Saturday's edition of the EagleHerald. As usual, Desotell understood his topic and chose two great local places. The Marine House, in Marinette, and Schooner Pub & Grill, in Menominee, are two of the area's most popular places for a fish fry.

In the EagleHerald's 2012 Best of the Best Reader's Choice Awards balloting, both places received a significant number of votes in the Best Fish Fry category. The Marine House received the second most votes, trailing only Marinette's Rail House Restaurant and Brew Pub by a few votes. Others receiving a significant number of votes included Schooners, Dexter's, Applejacks Restaurant, Schloegel's Bay View Restaurant, Murray's Irish Pub & Grill, Mike & Jeans Bar & Grill and Pirate's Cove Pub & Grill. Berg's Landing received the most Reader's Choice Awards votes in the Best Seafood Restaurant category.

Friday nights are often one of the busier times at all of these places and they are especially popular this time of year. About one in four U.S. citizens is Catholic, and most Catholics don't eat meat on Fridays during Lent. Wisconsin has a higher percentage of Catholics than most states which likely plays a role in why Wisconsinites love a good fish fry.
