ONTONAGON, Mich. — Inventor and Ontonagon native Gray Webber of Webber Construction and Fabrication LLC is publicly introducing his line of well-drilling rigs: the Aqua Bore G3-Pro Series. Webber is beginning to expand his business and the use of the Aqua Bore in the Midwest. He recently sold products to well drilling companies in Florida, Virginia and Oregon.

Because of the rugged terrain of the Upper Peninsula, many cabins and cottages isolated in the woods are left without running water because of inaccessibility with standard well-drilling rigs. Webber saw an opportunity and decided to capitalize on it. After hundreds of hours of researching, prototyping and testing, he created his first compact, powerful, full-featured water well and geo-sampling drill rig in 2013.

“I take pride in my unique caged swivel design system that I build in house for the machines,” Webber said “The swivel is critical to the longevity and successful function of any drill rig.”

Since 2013, Webber has expanded his power options from the Standard Duty to Heavy Duty, Xtreme Duty and now the Ultra Duty diesel model. He offers various accessories with the machines that address the drilling needs of any professional.

The Ultra Duty is capable of drilling more than 450 feet though most any formations, including rock. The units are designed to use mud as the main fluid, but can also be fitted for air-drilling needs. Webber said he believes the Aqua Bore is the smallest, most powerful and affordable trailer rig of any in this category. His rigs are designed for everyday use and the needs of professional drillers.

With the help of Invent@NMU, a Northern Michigan University idea incubator that specializes in helping entrepreneurs and inventors of all ages with their product and business development needs, Webber developed a product launch and marketing strategy. Invent@NMU Student Project Manager Mike Wilber, a junior marketing major, has worked closely with Webber.

“My experience managing this project has been invaluable,” Wilber said. “I’ve been able to put my education to use in real-time to help execute on Gray’s strategy.”

Along with the Aqua Bore G3-Pro Series, Webber sells a compact, versatile material-handling product called the Rail Hoist. The Rail Hoist is intended to vertically move materials and construction equipment. Webber’s products are designed, engineered and manufactured in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula.
