Life lessons learned

MARINETTE - Volunteers are not uncommon in the community and they come from all backgrounds and for their own reasons. For Chad Francour, the decision was an easy one. He just wanted to give back. Francour, a Town of Peshtigo native and a 2006 Marinette High School graduate, was recently honored for his work with Hospice Advantage in Green Bay with their Heart of Compassion and Volunteer of the Year awards. In four months, he provided more than 120 hours of service with the hospice by visiting and comforting patients who have six months to live or less and their families. "I like the work," the 25-year-old Francour said. "It has humbled me a lot and has made me think about life differently. I met a lot of great people this way."

Pastor Schoen says farewell

MENOMINEE - "Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters ..." Colossians 3:23 could easily be used to describe the way the Rev. Doug Schoen has spent the past 40 years of his life. Schoen's role as head of the flock at Emmanuel Lutheran Church in Menominee came to a close after 33 years Sunday as he began his retirement. Having a pastor leave the church is much like seeing an older sibling leave home to go out on their own. You know they'll be back from time-to-time but they won't be part of the day-to-day interaction of the family.

One Mission. One Team.

The call comes into a 911 dispatch center in Menominee or Marinette County. Seconds later, emergency medical technicians, paramedics, firefighters or law enforcement officers are on their way to the scene. It could be an accident on the highway, a person having a heart attack or someone working with power tools that went out of control. But because of the teams of trained volunteers and professionals with the skills and tools needed to save lives, many recover from these frightening and often life-threatening events. Emergency Medical Services providers are the day-to-day heroes saving lives of your family members, friends and neighbors. Often, they are those same people - but they wear the added hats of EMTs, paramedics, nurses, physicians and First Responders. This week is National EMS Week, and across the country, departments large and small are being honored for doing what comes naturally to most of their members - giving of themselves to help others in their communities. Marinette and Menominee counties, with their vast arteries of roads and highways, are predominately rural. While the area is fortunate to have a hospital with an emergency department and 24-hour paramedic services, they could never adequately cover the length and breadth of both large counties without the help of the volunteer rescue squads and first responders.

MARINETTE - Major facelifts at Marinette Marine are over for the time being. A ceremonial ribbon cutting ceremony Monday marked the final phase of building construction along the Menominee River. "Today marks a new chapter in our history. The opening of this building celebrates the completion of Fincantieri's nearly $74 million capital investment," exclaimed Chuck Goddard, president and CEO of Marinette Marine. Since 2009, the company has completed 13 on-site projects, including five major buildings. The result is a shipbuilding yard that runs like a well-oiled machine.

Vigil scheduled for Red Arrow tragedy victim

MARINETTE - It's been nearly three years since 9-year-old Kelvin Motsinger of Menominee drowned at Red Arrow Park in Marinette. The anniversary of the tragedy continues to affect his family but perhaps no one more than his now 13-year-old sister Natalie who was swimming with him at the time. The two were near a drop-off where the depth goes from just a few feet to about eight feet. At the time, witnesses said Kelvin went under, grabbed onto his sister and tried to get to shallower water. She was able to free herself but still needed help from another swimmer. By the time Natalie reached shore, Kelvin was nowhere to be seen. Natalie raced to her father and calls for help prompted other swimmers to join in the search.
